Children's Test Requirements
10th Kyu (yellow belt) (30 hours 4 - 6 months)
- Show seiza (formal sitting posture)
- Proper sitting and standing bow
- Demonstrate extension practice in hanmi
- Demonstrate shikko (knee walking)
- Demonstrate back rolls
- Two-step turn
- Slide turn ---------------------------------------------------------
- Demonstrate katate dori kokyu nage (Breath throw)
- Katate dori ikkyo irimi with pin (wave throw)
- Ai dori kotegaeshi (waterfall throw)
- Define and pronounce: Aikido (Ai = love or harmony, Ki = energy, Do = path or way). Onegai shimasu (Oh-nigh guy-she-mahss please). Domo arigato gozaimashita (doe-moe ah-ree-gah-toe go-zah-ee-mah-she-tah thank you very much)
- Show self-discipline
9th Kyu (orange belt)
All previous test requirements plus:
- Fast and slow, quiet, balanced forward and backward rolls
- Strikes with kiai: tsuki (punch), shomen uchi (strike to top of head), yokomen uchi (strike to side of head)
- Shomen uchi ikkyo with pin--irimi & tenkan
- Tsuki kotegaeshi with pin (wrist turn out throw)
- Ai dori shiho nage (4 direction throw) --------------------------------------------------------------
- Ai dori (cross hand grab) kokyunage (breath throw)
- 2 variations from katate dori (one hand grab)
- Define and pronounce: irimi (entering), tenkan (turning), ukemi (taking the fall), hara (center of body)
- Swari waza kokyu ho (seated technique breath throw)
- Bo: advance, retreat, tsuki, yokomen uchi
- Define uke (person being thrown), and nage (the person who throws), energy (ki) & center (hara).
- Tell the name of Aikido's founder and something about his life. (Morihei Ueshiba, O Sensei was born in 1883. After a lifetime of studying martial arts, science and spiritual arts, he founded Aikido in 1942. For the next ten years he consolidated the techniques and refined the spiritual philosophy of Aikido. O Sensei trained in Aikido right up to his death at 86 years of age. He envisioned that Aikido training would help us create a global family and achieve peace throughout the world)
8th Kyu (purple belt)
All previous test requirements plus:
- Forward and backward rolls with a partner
- 1st half of Bo ikkyo
- Swari waza shomen uchi ikkyo with pin–-irimi and tenkan
- Kata dori (shoulder grab) ikkyo with pin-–irimiand tenkan
- Yokomen uchi (strike to side of head) shihonage
- Ushiro ryote dori sankyo with pin -----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Ai dori (cross hand grab) irimi nage (entering technique)
- Shomen uchi (strike to the top front of the head) irimi nage
- 3 techniques from: tsuki (punch), ryote dori (both hands grabbed by both hands) and ushiro ryote dori (both wrists grabbed from behind)
- Define and pronounce: hanmi (triangular stance), ma ai (appropriate distance), swari waza (sitting techniques), & zanshin (awareness)
- Name and explain 2 principles of Aikido (i.e. what does ‘being grounded in our body’ mean? How do we find our center? How do we extend energy?)
- Describe what you like about Aikido training
- Tell a story about how you used your Aikido training in school, on the playground or at home. (i.e., getting out of the way of something coming at you; avoiding an argument by finding your center; regaining your balance when slipping; taking a roll when you lose your balance)
7th Kyu (green belt)
All previous test requirements plus:
- Forward and backward rolls with a partner
- Roll over one person
- Ukemi with instructor throwing
- Bo ikkyo with precision, balance, and flow
- Swari waza shomen uchi irimi nage
- Kata dori ikkyo--irimi and tenkan
- Katate dori shiho nage
- Ryote dori tenchi nage (heaven and earth throw)
- Morote dori kokyu nage --------------------------------------------------------------
- Irimi nage from: shomen uchi, ai dori, tsuki
- Ikkyo from: morote dori and ushiro ryote dori
- Sankyo from: aidori and ushiro ryote dori
- Variations: 3 techniques each: katate-dori,
morote-dori, tsuki - Freestyle
- Randori (multiple attack)
- Swari waza ryote dori kokyu ho
- 1 page written and submitted prior to your kyu examination

- Swari waza kata dori ikkyo--irimi and tenkan
- Hanmi handachi shomen uchi irimi nage
- Kata dori nikkyo with seated pins-- irimi and tenkan
- Katate dori shihonage-- irimi and tenkan. ----------------------------------------------------------------
- Tsuki kotegaeshi-- irimi and tenkan
- Ushiro ryote dori sankyo with pin
- Irimi nage from: ai dori, tsuki, shomen uchi
