Children's Test Requirements

10th Kyu (yellow belt) (30 hr. / 4-6 months)

1. Show seiza(formal sitting posture).

2. Proper sitting and standing bow.

3. Demonstrate extension practice in hanmi.

4. Demonstrate knee walking.

5. Demonstrate back rolls (standing to standing)

6. 2 step turn.

7. Slide turn.

8. Demonstrate Katatedori kokyunage($100 bill throw).

9. Katatedori ikkyo-irimi -with pin(wave throw).

10. Define and pronounce: Aikido (Ai = love or harmony, Ki = energy, Do = path or way). Onegai Shimasu (Oh-nigh guy-she-mahss please). Domo Arigato Gozaimashita (doe-moe ah-ree-gah-toe go-zah-ee-mah-she-tah thank you very much).

11. Show self-discipline

 

9th Kyu (yellow belt with an orange stripe)

1. Forward rolls (Standing to standing).

2. Be able to tie your own belt.

3. Slide turn.

4. Katatedori ikkyo(the wave throw) -irimi and tenkan- with pin.

5. Aidori(cross hand grab) shihonage(under the bridge throw).

6. Aidori kotegaeshi(waterfall throw).

7. Tsuki(punch) kotegaeshi.

8. Kokyu-ho from seiza (drinking tea throw).

9. Define uke(person being thrown), and nage(the person who throws), energy(ki) & center(hara).

10. Name and explain 2 principles of Aikido (i.e. what does ïbeing grounded in our bodyÍ mean? or centered, focused. How do we extend energy?) and describe what you like about Aikido training.

 

8th Kyu (orange belt)

all previous test requirements plus:

1. Fast and slow, quiet, balanced forward and backward rolls.

2. Strikes with kiai: Tsuki (punch), Shomen uchi (Strike to top of head), Yokomen uchi (strike to side of head).

3. Shomenuchi ikkyo -irimi & tenkan- with pin.

4. Tsuki kotegaeshi with pin (wrist turn throw).

5. Yokomeuchi shihonage (4 direction throw) .

6. Aidori (cross hand grab) kokyunage (breath throw) .

7. 2 variations from Katatedori (one hand grab).

8. Define and pronounce: irimi (entering), tenkan (turning), ukemi (taking the fall), hara (center of body).

9. Suwari waza kokyuho (seated technique breath throw).

10. Bo: advance, retreat, tsuki, yokomenuchi.

11. Tell the name of Aikido's founder and something about his life. (Morihei Ueshiba, OÍSensei was born in 1883. After a lifetime of studying martial arts, science and spiritual arts, he founded Aikido in 1942. He trained in Aikido right up to his death at 86 yr. old. He envisioned that Aikido training would help us achieve peace throughout the world).

 

7th Kyu (purple belt)

all previous test requirements plus:

1. Forward and backward rolls with a partner.

2. 1st half of Bo Ikkyo.

3. Suwariwaza shomenuchi ikkyo -irimi & tenkan- with pin.

4. Katadori (shoulder grab) ikkyo -irimi and tenkan- with pin.

5. Ushiro ryotedori sankyo with pin.

6. Aidori (cross hand grab) irimi-nage (entering technique).

7. Shomenuchi (strike to the top front of the head) irimi-nage.

8. 3 techniques from: tsuki (punch), ryotedori (both hands grabbed by both hands) and ushiro ryotedori (both wrists grabbed from behind).

9. Define and pronounce: hanmi (triangular stance), ma-ai (appropriate distance), suwariwaza (sitting techniques), and zanshin (unbroken awareness and concentration).

10. Tell a story about how you used your Aikido training in school, on the playground or at home. (i.e., getting out of the way of something coming at you; avoiding an argument by finding your center; regaining your balance when slipping; taking a roll when you lose your balance).

 

6th Kyu (green belt)

all previous test requirements plus:

1. Forward and backward rolls with partner.

2. Roll over one person.

3. Ukemi with instructor throwing.

4. Bo ikkyo with precision ,balance and flow.

5. Suwari waza Shomenuchi Ikkyo-irimi and tenkan.

6. Kata-dori Ikkyo-irimi and tenkan.

7. Kata-dori Nikkyo-irimi and tenkan.

8. Ryote-dori tenchi-nage(heaven and earth throw).

9. Morote-dori Kokyunage.

10. Irimi-nage from: shomenuchi, aidori, tsuki.

11. Ikkyo from: morotedori, ushiro ryote-dori.

12. Sankyo from: idori, ushiro ryote-dori, ushiro kubishime.

13. Variations: 3 techniques each: Katate-dori, Morote-dori, Tsuki.

14. Freestyle.

15. Rondori(multiple attack.)

16. Suwari waza ryote-dori kokyuho.

17. 1 page written and submitted prior to your kyu examination. ñWhy I practice Aikido.î
