This is our family—our partners in the study of martial awareness and spiritual balance. Aikido practice cultures and requires trust, and thus builds a strong community spirit. We depend on each other to remain physically and emotionally safe. This develops strong bonds of friendship, shared purpose, and mutual support, and provides a fertile environment to practice compassion and equanimity. As our practice at Two Cranes has evolved, so too has our dojo culture. Our members come from all over town and share their talent and curiosity, on and off the mat. The community provides not just training, but affords its members a way to share the joys and challenges of everyday life in a safe and respectful manner. Each of our students has contributed towards making our school a creative and vibrant learning environment. History of Two Cranes Two Cranes Aikido opened its doors in the Greenlake neighborhood of Seattle on October 1, 1995. Aikido’s expansive movements and rolls, seen through the dojo’s windows, often caught the eye of curious passersby. We grew in capacity and diversity as a training group, but we didn't know what to call ourselves. Several months later, during our open house, someone brought a red enamel gift box with two cranes on the lid. In Japan, cranes are associated with peace and fidelity. Mating for life, they are considered by many to be the bird of happiness. The powerful wings of the crane enable them to fly between heavenly worlds and take people to higher levels of spiritual consciousness. We decided that if we honored these birds as our namesake, we would be guided in the right direction. In 2006, Two Cranes relocated to the Maple Leaf neighborhood, a few short miles from our original school. Our new dojo was blessed with a larger space, high ceilings, new mats and bamboo floors. The 4,000 square feet is a sacred space that invites tranquility, earnest learning and spiritual renewal. He was fascinated by the idea of a non-competitive martial art that didn’t relay on physical strength. He asked around and found a small dojo led by Frank Doran Sensei. After watching one class he was completely hooked -for life. Outside the dojo he applies Aikido principles tohis interactions with other people. He says “If I can be aware of someone else’s intent then I can try to align with it rather than react to it. So, in addition to its focus on kindness and finding peaceful ways to resolve conflict, he was drawn to aikido because of how graceful the movements can be. Adam began his training in 1992 at the University of Washington with Gary Barnett Sensei. In 1997, he joined Emerald City Aikido and trained with Joanne Veneziano Sensei until she retired as dojo cho in 2023. Adam is delighted to now be training at Two Cranes Aikido with Kimberly Richardson Sensei, hoping the elegance of her circular aikido movements will rub off on him. Was off and on for some years until 2013 when he finally realized he had to do aikido as he is able to. Aikido informs all aspects of David’s life and is a key place of joy and laughter. As a teacher in the kid’s program, David’s channels his inner child works to connect with and lead the kids in playing with and deepening their practice in this magical and life-long art. I was drawn by the sense of community that radiated from training. Kimberly Sensei was a shining leader by example of the ethos of Aiki – respect for all, open inviting blending, calm resolution. She has created a vibrant community of practitioners in the art of peace that he is honored to be a part of. He has a background in athletics as a player, coach, referee, and administrator. He continues to complement his aikido training with tai chi. Dave was first drawn to try aikido by the focus on interacting with a partner to maintain connection throughout dynamic movements. As his training has developed he has come to appreciate the way the aikido principle of embracing conflict for peaceful resolution translates to every aspect of his life off the mat.
