Update from the TCI Board

August 10, 2020

Greetings to you all! We hope the summer has brought you delight in our beautiful Pacific Northwest as we all spend time outdoors relishing the warmth, sunshine and fresh air. We are writing now to tell you of our upcoming plans as well as to ask how you are doing and how you would like to be engaged as we move forward. We are also wanting to express our deepest gratitude to you for your support to TCI during this COVID time. Your generosity makes it possible for us to keep our programs functioning creatively on all levels and plans for the future alive. Thank you.

This October marks the 25th anniversary of the opening of Two Cranes Aikido. We will be celebrating where we have come from, our present and how we move forward. Three one-day seminars via Zoom are on the calendar. The first is September 26th with Mary Heiny, Michael Freidl, Kimberly Richardson and Joanne Veneziano Senseis. The second is November 14th with the senior teachers in the dojo and, in December, we will celebrate our youth who will take Aikido into the future. Look for our announcements and mark your calendars!

This summer Two Cranes Aikido has been working assiduously on keeping our community together as we weather the ever-changing waters of COVID. Our teachers have become quite creative in their Zoom presentations and small gatherings. We have begun a few outdoor classes for youth in Lynda Sensei’s back yard and expect to start some small gatherings in the parks soon. Kimberly Sensei has met informally with a number of students in a variety of outdoor spaces. Dave Sensei has stepped beyond basic props to creating a video of himself (named “Otto”) to demonstrate technique within his classes, truly something you need to see to appreciate its inspiration! In each case, we feel our connections to each other enlivened and engaged. We are grateful for your participation in all of this.

The TCI Board of Directors is also working hard. Plans for a new roof, air flow and plumbing updates are close to being finalized and we expect to move forward with these in the fall. We are creating new structures to support our community in the form of Board committees. The Health and Safety committee will prepare the dojo and create procedures for safely returning to practice inside. The Facilities committee will help us maintain our building and garden areas and the Parent committee will engage our families in helping us create the best youth program we can. We are also charging our Inclusivity Committee to create practices that address BLM, anti-racism, gender equity, accessibility and inclusivity issues for all. Martin Luther King reminds us that, "It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied to a single garment of destiny."

We look forward to hearing from you whether it’s about training, volunteering, donating or anti-racism work!

In gratitude,

TCI Board of Directors,
